Last Christmas, Daisy Nixon from 3 Counties Church in Haslemere realised that the only advent calendars widely available in the shops were chocolate calendars or serious adult calendars. She felt that parents would love their children to have an alternative to these and also have the opportunity to give to others at this time of year, when so much attention can be focused on receiving things for ourselves.
She came up with the idea of children in the Junior Church making their own advent calendars to sell to raise money for Connected Church. The children produced some lovely and funny artwork and Daisy was inundated with messages of how much fun everyone found the calendars which sold out after two weeks and raised about £200 for their link with Eagles in Malawi!
Daisy sent one of the calendars to us and we are using it in the office this advent!
What a great way to get your children involved in your Connected Church link and to draw focus away from the commercialisation of Christmas.
Margaret Weston from St Marks Church, Gillingham also got in touch to tell us what they do each Christmas to raise funds for their project:
Instead of giving cards to each of our friends in church we ask people to post one Christmas card on our Tearfund board which is addressed to 'everyone'. The money saved from cards/stamps is then donated to our Connected Church project. This year we raised £230 from this initiative- Praise the Lord!
Thank you to everyone at both churches for your Christmas ideas and the money you have raised for Eagles in Malawi and Kigezi in Uganda!
