I wrote some prayers to guide one of our InnerChange prayer meetings and have shared them below for you to use with your church or small group. I used them to open each section of prayer, and then opened up some time after each one for people to bring their own prayers as they felt led.

Coming before God

As we let the noise of our lives settle as a snowglobe settles when it ceases being shaken, we come before you quietly and expectantly.

We breathe deeply, filling our lungs with you and remembering that our breath is holy.

As we sit together before you in this brand new moment, we remember that you are always making all things new.

Bring new life to all the many things we hold in our hands this day. Continue your work in us and center us in you this place.

Praying for the World

God, amidst the vastness and the complexity and the variety of this world, it can be all too easy to feel disconnected. Expand our hearts to feel the joys and pains of our brothers and sisters across the world.

When we are overwhelmed at the brokenness of our world, with all the war and suffering and injustice, sit close with us in our lament. Don’t let us move from our heartbreak too quickly, lest we forget to see you there. But instead remind us in that in the darkness you are the G-d of the single flame of quiet, unexplainable light. And that all the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.

Praying for our Community

As we have prayed for our world we acknowledge that peace and love and justice and truth must begin at home. Fill us afresh with joy for committing to this place. For committing to the day in, day out, unglamorous hard work of love.

Show us where to plant, and guide all that we do in this place. Help us find the lonely and be their friends, the conflict and bring peace, the sadness and bring joy, the despair and bring hope.

Help us discover the piece of you we hold in our hands, and use it to bring your Kingdom to Earth.

Prayer for Ourselves

As we bring the things on our mind before you G-d, bring your spirit close to our minds.

Remind us that although we live a world where the things we want to don’t always happen, you haven’t finished yet. Remind us that everything will be alright in the end, and it it’s not alright, it’s not the end. And give us patience and grace and joy as we wait.
