It's Summer

It’s Summer. As the flowers are in full bloom, and the sunshine draws our neighbours out of their houses, may God give us eyes to see his Kingdom everywhere, remembering that each person we meet has so much to teach us!

I often find myself thinking that I have lots to bring to my low socio-economic community, all the solutions and answers. And yet when I reflect, I realise that instead my community brings so much to me. I learn about life from my neighbours here. I learn about friendship and loneliness, struggle and joy, having babies and growing old. The rich tapestry of the life God has given us - it’s all here.

I wonder how much would change if we stopped seeing people as projects, and began to see them as friends, friends to learn from and explore life with. I think it might look a little bit like heaven.

Lord, grant us the ability to think with your mind, to hear with your ears, to see with your eyes, to speak with your mouth, to walk with your feet, to love with your heart. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer is key to keeping our minds attuned to God as we work for change in our communities. Shane Claibourne and others have written a revised version of the common prayer which can be accessed here. I love reading it either together with others in the morning, or alone over my cup of coffee.
