Organising a Big Bake

If you are planning a fundraising event for your Connected Church partner, why not organise a Big Bake? Everyone loves a good cake sale. They’re fun to take part in and easy-as-pie to organise. It’s a great way to spread the word about the work your partner is doing.

Here are some tips to help make your Big Bake a big success!

  • Plan your venue nice and early. Think about alternative venues near you, like a town square, village green or school.
  • Once you’ve found the venue, confirm a date as soon as possible. You don’t want to be double booked with the Annual Goat Club Barbecue or local Rugby Club Demolition Derby.
  • Why not theme your Big Bake around your partner? What ingredients or recipes are popular where they work?
  • You might want to have some prizes like at a Village Fair, or a competition for the more serious bakers among you.
  • Ask your local grocer or supermarket if they are interested in donating some ingredients. They're very friendly you know!
  • Get the whole church on board. Even if they couldn’t bake beans on toast, they could still lend a hand on the day.
  • Don your publicity hat and spread the word – you can do it for free on Facebook and Twitter.

This year Tearfund supporters will be holding Big Bakes across the country from the 8th to the 16th October to raise money for our campaign against hunger (you don’t have to join in then, just pick a date that works for you). To help them, Tearfund has created a pack filled with tips and useful resources. If you’re interested, you can register your Big Bake and order your pack at
